Audrey’s shoes clacked rhythmically across the frosty surface of the cold storage floor as she paced, her mind desperately grasping at ideas of how to get out of here.

“You’ll be hypothermic long before you wear a furrow in the floor deep enough to get us through to the next deck, you know,” Lapsys said from his perch on a pile of boxes to her right.

“It helps me think,” she answered, waving dismissively, though she immediately wrapped both arms around herself again, hands rubbing over her upper arms.

Lapsys grumbled and slid from his perch, moving over to where she paced. “At the very least, take my jacket,” he offered, shrugging it off.

“Ever the gentleman,” Audrey snapped. She regretted it right away when he stiffened a little.

“I would be well within my rights to say that, as you’re the one who got us into this jam, you should be the one to freeze, but I’m not saying that because, as you say, I am a gentleman.”

“Sorry,” Audrey mumbled as she pulled on the jacket, trying not to think too much about the warmth that still lingered from his body or the scent of his soap she could catch on the collar. “And thank you,” she added as his hands replaced hers, rubbing slowly over her arms.

“You know,” he said, “there are much more pleasant ways to keep warm.”

He moved closer, and Audrey leaned toward him, telling herself that it was only to conserve warmth and not because she felt better when she was close to him. “I’m fairly certain this room is airtight. I don’t think we should be expending any extra oxygen here.”

His hands moved to settle at her hips, pulling her closer still, until she was pressed close to his chest. “We can take things nice and slow,” he offered, his nose tracing the shell of her ear as he spoke.

“I’m not sure that’s how it works,” she murmured, but the shiver running through her was not entirely due to the cold, and she tilted her head up to look at him.

He met her gaze, smiling faintly in that infuriatingly smug way that still managed somehow to be charming. “But we were so rudely interrupted the last time,” he pointed out, his hand settling on the small of her back, bringing their hips firmly together.

She thought back to their billiard game, to how easy it would have been to push the mission aside for just a few hours with Phillip.

Lapsys. Not Phillip.

She shook her head and pulled back a little. She had a mission to focus on, and this dalliance with Lapsys was nothing but a distraction, one she definitely didn’t need right now. Freedom was just around the corner, and she had to keep her focus on that.

Still, part of the job was keeping Lapsys on the hook.

“It was rather rude, wasn’t it?” she asked, leaning in close again.

“Very,” Lapsys agreed, nodding. “And I find that a good release... clears the mind a bit, don’t you?”

She knew perfectly well he was feeding her a line, but she had to admit he was right.
